A “gummy smile” occurs when an excess of gum tissue conceals the top part of the tooth. At 286 Madison Dental, gum reshaping, or contouring, can improve the smile by eliminating the extra soft tissue and exposing more of your teeth. Gum sculpting can not only give you a more aesthetically appealing smile but also improve your oral health by reducing areas where bacteria frequently accumulate. This reduces your chances of developing gum disease, tooth decay, and oral infections. Please make an appointment for a consultation with our team at our office in New York, NY to get more information about gum sculpting.

Gum contouring may give you a more attractive smile while also improving your general oral health. You might be a good candidate for gum reshaping and sculpting if you want a better smile by correcting a "gummy" look. Gum sculpting can help create a more even gumline when your gums appear low. It's also great if you struggle with chronic oral infections or periodontal disease due to bacteria trapped in large gum pockets.

My most recent visit was to have gum surgery on the upper right side of my mouth, to finish from the previously done upper left side. The procedure was a breeze and Dr. Kaufman was excellent and professional as usual. Recovery was great and the follow ups have been great as well. Awesome experience as usual!

I went to see Dr. Shmuely for a second opinion over 5 years ago at his practice in midtown Manhattan and I have never looked back. I receive excellent care from Dr. Shmuely and have had several procedures performed at this office. Every procedure (tooth extraction/implant, crown, periodontal cleaning, osseous surgery, general tooth care) has been handled professionally and with care. The staff explained everything in advance and there is good follow up by both the doctors and the dental hygienist is amazing. Dr. Shmuely is a fantastic dentist and 286 Madison Dental in NYC is a terrific place to go to care for your teeth. You will not regret it!

Gum contouring is done in our NYC office with local anesthesia. We may offer sedation options if you have anxiety or fears about dental treatments. Prior to the actual procedure, your teeth and gums will be cleaned and dried. Our team will laser-cut away gum tissue until a more balanced gum line is revealed. The laser tool seals the gums to minimize bleeding throughout the treatment. As soon as your gumline is contoured, our team will clean your gums so you can enjoy your results. Our dental team can finish gum sculpting in one appointment for most patients.

Once we complete your procedure, you'll receive home care instructions. We may prescribe antibiotics if signs of infection are seen during the treatment. Your gums might be red and swollen for a few weeks, but with a proper oral care routine at home of daily flossing and brushing, your gum tissue will quickly return to normal. You should still attend annual dental examinations at 286 Madison Dental so our team can check the health of your gums and teeth.
